While laser processing is already a well-established fabrication method in automotive production, new techniques are being developed to bring further advantage to this prominent market sector. Some of these techniques, such as metal 3D printing and lightweight materials joining, are empowering new structural designs for the parts of automotive products. This paper presents studies regarding the implementation of a coating process, known as “laser cladding”, used in order to produce brake discs with a progressive microgeometry able to generate an effective protection against wear and corrosion, on a fast and economic fabrication process.
