This paper is about a generalist view on optical interferometers and their applications in many measurements and determinations. Interferometry is a well known method for measuring peturbations in waves, refractive index of materials and for very precise measurements of displacements. Starting from double-slit experiment of Thomas Young and explaining the phenomenon of interference, then we can establish the principles of optical interferometry with examples like Michelson interferometer and Mach Zehnder interferometer on measurements of refractive index of a gas and plasma, therefore we describe a simple fringe counting algorithm to determine refractive index of a gas.
