The main purpose of this paper was to determine the best approach of modelling the contact between the tooth flanks for a spur gear. To analyse the spur gear, a 2D finite element model was realised in Ansys Workbench using solid 2D PLANE183 elements, plane stress option and the pairs of CONTA172 and TARGE169 to model the contact. The contact stress was analytically computed using the Hertz equation to compare it with the results obtained using Ansys code. For the finite element models a frictional contact type between the tooth flanks was used. The considered frictional coefficients were:0, 0.11, 0.15 and 0.2. The relatively large values for the frictional coefficients were chosen due to the lack of gear lubrication. The lack of gear lubrication was considered because this model will be used further in modelling the plastic deformation of the teeth
